Deming

Deming is a bustling and growing community, balancing the revival of its historic districts with the development and expansion of new resources to support its community. Deming’s community forest mirrors that balance. Deming boasts a high number of parks throughout town, both historic  and new, including a dog park, splash pad, and BMX bike area. The Tree Lake area is newly developed for recreation. This variety creates a complex and large tree maintenance and irrigation workload.

The focus of the community forestry plan in Deming will be on identifying and sustaining long range support and systems for the municipal staff.

Focus areas include:

  • assessing park and recreational spaces for new planting and irrigation and maintenance needs
  • identifying tree maintenance, removal, and replacement needs at older landscapes including the cemetery and Silver Street
  • assessing maintenance needs along Gold Street and the economic district

Community Tree Overview

Deming has a combination of streetscapes and older parks with aging trees and newly developed areas in need of more trees. Municipal partners expressed the need for help with planting and irrigation.

Public spaces initially identified for tree planting and maintenance include: S. Gold Street, Tree Lake and walking path, dog park, splash park, cemetery, and the BMX bike area. In 2017 trees near the courthouse, downtown, and older parks were mapped as part of a NM State Forestry project, providing the beginnings of a tree inventory.

Community Engagement Strategies

50% of Luna County residents speak Spanish at home. Community engagement will need to have opportunities for Spanish speakers to engage in the process.

Information Hubs will be available at the Luna County Administration Office, with materials in English and Spanish.

Bilingual Community Surveys will be deployed In-Person at a public meeting for the project. Additional events may be added to meet the needs of the community.
